The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Tuesday removed Atlanta Public Schools from probation, a sanction that has threatened the system’s accreditation since it was imposed in January 2011.
In lifting the sanction, SACS found that the Atlanta Board of Education has completed work on four of six school-system governance improvements the organization required when it put the district’s high schools on probation.
Tuesday’s order gives the board until next Sept. 30 to make “substantial and sustained” progress on the other two, which involve improving communications with the public and making sure board members are adhering to board policies on ethics and following the chain of command...
