Murder suspect surrenders days after Congress Street shooting death

Dwayne Smith was charged with murder today in connection with Wednesday's fatal shooting of a man near Ann and Congress streets.

Dwayne Smith surrendered today to face a murder charge in connection with the shooting death of Kenny Roosevelt Hughes Wednesday afternoon.

MOBILE, Alabama -- A 24-year-old man surrendered today to face a murder charge in connection with the shooting death of a 47-year-old man Wednesday afternoon on a street west of downtown, Mobile police said.

Spokesman Cpl. Christopher Levy said Dwayne Smith turned himself in to Mobile police headquarters. He was in Mobile County Metro Jail today without bail.

Hughes was shot about 4:40 p.m. near Ann and Congress streets in a residential neighborhood, police said. Hughes was taken to University of South Alabama Medical Center, where he later died, Levy said.
